SAFe unFIXed  !

How to fix problems with the Scaled Agile Framework by applying ideas from the unFIX model ?

The unFIX model is a work in progress. It can be used as an alternative starting point but people can also use it as a complementary model in addition to existing agile methods and frameworks.

The unFIX model has exclusive focus on organization design and does this better and more extensively than any agile framework. However, unFIX does not suggest specific roles or practices. For processes, we can easily borrow many good ideas from existing models and methods. Therefore, anyone who is already looking into SAFe can still apply any practices that SAFe suggests while using unFIX to improve how they organize themselves.

The Kanban Board Game!

Do you want to spend some time playing a good old board game while running the most realistic simulation of the Kanban method you've ever seen? Come join us in the Kanban Board Game workshop!

During the workshop we'll run a board game designed to teach concepts and mechanics of Kanban Method. It's part of the official curriculum of Kanban certifications and it's super realistic.

The game/simulation runs for around 3 hours (maximum 3h30) all inclusive: intro, gaming and debriefs. It accepts a maximum of 24 people, to be divided into 4 groups of 6 people. Each group goes through 18 rounds (or until time limit) and in each round they need to decide how to organize around the incoming demands. Their decisions lead to good or bad team performance measured in lead time and business value, meanwhile some surprising elements are added to the game.

It's awesome! It's a well known game/simulation which has been played world-wide with great feedback! Et voilà! Let's have fun and discover Kanban!

Making decisions in a way that creates commitment

If we want self-organization to work, it is essential that we make decisions in a way that creates commitment. Only then can we expect people to follow through on them without being instructed and controlled. In this context, it is overall more effective to involve people while making a decision rather than trying to convince them after a decision has already been made. Involvement creates commitment.

In this workshop, you will learn and practice how to make decisions synchronously in groups with consent and asynchronously with the advice process. You will also learn how to choose when to use which decision-making process.

This workshop is based on a booklet that was designed to help people at celebrate company decide how to decide. celebrate is a 500 people multi-brand, remote-first company with 5 locations in Germany and France. The workshop is designed with the "training from the back of the room" framework around small group practice of the content.

360 whys - a purpose workshop

The stories we tell about ourselves best reflect our values, strengths and motivations. I strongly believe, that one’s personal “why” can be distilled from these. Only if we have found our “why”, we can and should progress with our teams “why” (its mission/goal) or even to that of our company to see our own spot in it. That is the basic idea behind “360 Why’s”

The Workshop consists of three parts:

  1. In the first part we will tell each other stories from our work environment. We’ll do that in smaller groups to foster communication. The ALEsome colleagues of your group will listen intently to your (maybe) hidden strengths and exceptional abilities to reflect them to you on little cards after you have finished your story. These cards will be the foundation for the second part of the workshop. Don't worry - you can stay very shallow with your stories or - if you want to - go incredibly deep. The choice is yours.
  2. In the second part – inspired by the ideas of Simon Sinek’s “Start with why” and “Find your why” – we will split in to pairs and have meaningful guided conversations to work on a first iteration of your personal “why”. In this part you will take turns with your partner to be the one seeking the “why” and the one guiding the other person. By the end of this round you should have a “why” – Statement that you can keep working on, once the workshop is over.
  3. In the third part, we will finally explore ways to combine the “why’s” of each team member to shape and stimulate the “why” of your team or even your company. This again will be done in groups of four to foster idea creation with the ALEsome colleagues of your group. My best hope for this workshop is to facilitate an experience of connection between each other, to raise the chances of finding your "why" and to make it easier for you to discovery how your work environment can stimulate your personal “why”.

Agilists, you're doing the kanban thing wrong

The "original" kanban in a Toyota factory was a piece of metal sheet moving around the workshop. It's now - in the agile world - synonym with a (usually) three columns board upon which sticky notes move back and forth. And at best there's some kind of limitation to the number of notes allowed in some of the columns. Gone are the notions of visible leadtime, andon, takt and built-in quality. With real world example from the work we've be doing at my company (No Parking) and at other places, I would like to show how and why we need to keep focusing on the invididual kanban (or sticky note), and not get lost on the board.

Sociocracy 3.0 – How Agile Teams Decide to Self-Organize

It’s in the Bible: «The best architectures, requirements, and designs emerge from self-organizing teams.» (Principles behind the agile manifesto). Just what is a self-organizing team, and how will it occur? There must be a reason so many Scrum teams, so many teams in general, continue to rely on a team lead, and continue to implement decisions as taken elsewhere. Sociocracy 3.0 collects a set of principles, concepts, and proven patterns for teams to become more nimble, more responsive, more resilient by developing their capability to collectively set direction and make decisions. This workshop will give you a practical introduction to open a new door to your self-organizing teams.

[Agile] Coaching Agreement as Creative Partnership

As an Agile coach, have you ever struggled with managing expectations of your role in the organization? Has magic in any shape or form been implicitly included in your responsibilities or deliverables? Was it expected of you to be “agile” and re-adjust the definition of your coaching activities with each and every shift of operational context? And what’s more, have you ever felt like carrying the weight of the whole Agile transformation on your shoulders?

Although there may be many heavy-lifting moments and unpredictable turns on the journey of organizational growth and development, there is a way to help you stay firmly grounded in your coaching intent. You can navigate a wide range of situations with more clarity and grace, while nurturing everyone’s commitment to bring change. You can grow trustful relationships and cultivate ownership of development by individual contributors, teams and leaders. Join this workshop to learn how to establish healthy boundaries, structure coaching priorities and enable self-organization from day one. Whether you’re an external or internal Agile coach, you will get many practical tips on how to effectively (re-)frame your Agile coaching engagements as creative partnerships through the lens of professional coaching agreements.

Three ways to spend the day

As a participant of this workshop, you will be part of one of three groups. Each group will participate in all three exercises:

  • product design,
  • event storming, and
  • impact mapping.

Different groups will do these in a different order, and discover different kinds of synergies and cumulative effects. We will have a common challenge to work on, and devise three different solutions. In between the exercises, you will meet in small groups to reflect and discuss the difference a specific method made on your perspective of the problem and solution.

Finally, after all groups have finished all three exercises, we will present our solutions and make sense of how the exercises helped us to reach those solutions.

Three workshops or one ?

It is a three location workshop. With a common thread we'll propose to you to apply different tools, different approaches, different reflections.

We will organize some checkpoints between all these three angles.

One thread, three perspectives.

Product Design - Think your company as a product

A workshop about your company as a product.

Three parts :

a) the product as an experience

b) the disruption idea and then

c) the sustainable product.

We're gonna have a conversation about product management, and why your company is a product. Hence how to emulate an experience, and why, then we will discuss the idea of disruption, and eventually the crossroad : the sustainable product, the regenerative design. Please be part of the conversation.

Impact Mapping

Impact Mapping is a method to find different roads to get to a goal, and devise the most promising paths along those roads. Traditionally used for scope definition and product planning, in this workshop, we will apply Impact Mapping to leadership, culture, and organisational design.

Why do we want to improve … ?

Who can help us achieve that goal?

What can they do differently in order to help us achieve that goal?

How can we support them in doing this?
